Euchre Variants
Euchre for Two
Making Trumps
Non-dealer may accept the proposed suit as trump, which she will do if she thinks she can win three tricks thereby, by announcing '(I) order it up', meaning that she orders the turned card up into the dealer's hand. If not, she passes this option to the dealer, who may herself either 'Take it up' or pass. If the dealer also passes she turns the trump card face down. Now non-dealer may announce another suit as trump, thereby obligating herself to win three tricks. If she passes, dealer may nominate a trump suit to the same effect. If she also passes, the cards are thrown in and non-dealer becomes the new dealer.
Play
Non-dealer leads to the first trick and usual rules apply. If the turned suit was accepted as trump by either player, dealer discards a card before playing to the first trick and counts the turn-up as part of her hand.
Score
The trump-maker scores 1 for the point (three or four tricks) or 2 for the march (all five). If she fails to take three, she is 'euchred' and her opponent scores 2 points. The winner is the first player to reach 5 points (or 7 or 10 or any other agreed number).
Variant
The game may be played with a 24-card pack, lacking Sevens and Eights.
Euchre for Three (Cut-throat)
This would more accurately be described as Solo Euchre, as there is only one trump-maker and the other two therefore play in temporary partnership to defeat her even though each plays to her own score in the long run. Preliminaries and trick-play as above. Player left of the dealer may order it up or pass; if she passes, the player on dealer's right may order it up or pass; if she passes, dealer may take it up or pass. If all pass, the turn-up is turned down and each in turn has one opportunity to make another trump suit (thereby obligating herself to win at least three tricks) or pass. If all pass, the hands are thrown in. If not, the lead is made by eldest hand after dealer has discarded if appropriate.
Score
The trump-maker scores 1 for the point or 2 for the march. If euchred she loses 2 points, which may give her a negative score. Game is 5, 7 or 10 up. Some credit a score of 3 for the march, a practice which may be recommended.

Euchre for Four (Partnership)
Partners sit opposite each other. Starting with dealer's left opponent, each in turn may order it up or pass.
If all pass, the turn-up is turned down, and the privilege of nominating another trump suit starts with dealer's left opponent and passes around the table until a suit is named. If all pass again the cards are thrown in and the next to deal does so.
If trumps are made, the opening lead is made by the eldest hand.
Going It Alone
The maker of trumps has the option of announcing 'I play alone', in which case her partner lays her hand of cards face down on the table. The lone player must then win three or more tricks out of her own hand against both opponents, for the advantage of a higher score if she wins the march. In this event the opening lead is made by the lone player's left-hand opponent.
Score
The making side scores 1 for the point, 2 for the march, or 4 for the march if won by a lone player. If it is euchred the opponents score 2.
Variant
If the maker elects to play alone, either opponent may similarly elect to defend alone. If the lone defender wins she scores 2 for the point or 4 for the march.
Revoke
A revoke may be corrected before the trick is gathered. If not, the opponents may either score 2 points or deduct from the offender's side 2 points, or 4 if she is playing alone.
